Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Prabowo Subianto took time to shake hands with and greet a number of Indonesian diaspora members and students who welcomed his arrival in Washington DC, United States, on Tuesday afternoon local time.

Upon arriving at his hotel, President Prabowo was presented with a bouquet of flowers by a young girl wearing traditional Indonesian attire.

In the lobby area and on the way to the lifts, dozens of Indonesian diaspora members and students, along with staff and officials from the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC and their families, welcomed President Prabowo's arrival, chanting: "Welcome to Washington DC, Mr President."

The diaspora members and students took the opportunity to wear traditional costumes from various regions as well as batik tops.

They also carried small Indonesian red-and-white flags to wave as President Prabowo walked past.

As President Prabowo made his way through the lobby, he shook hands one by one with the diaspora members and students who greeted him, saying: "Thank you, thank you."

Afterwards, the President approached a group of students and again expressed his gratitude for the welcome he had received. He also took the opportunity to greet several Indonesian military officers currently studying in the United States.

Behind President Prabowo, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya also greeted and shook hands with the Indonesian diaspora members and students.

Several diaspora members and students also took the opportunity to greet Cabinet Secretary Teddy.

President Prabowo arrived in Washington DC on Tuesday afternoon, after the Garuda Indonesia aircraft PK-GIF carrying the President and his limited entourage landed at Joint Base Andrews, Prince George's County, Maryland, at approximately 12.00 local time.

The President's arrival at Joint Base Andrews was welcomed by Indonesian Ambassador to the United States Dwisuryo Indroyono Soesilo, Defence Attaché of the Indonesian Embassy in Washington DC Air Vice-Marshal E Wisoko Aribowo, and Commander of the VVIP/VIP Aircraft Maintenance Group of the US Air Force at Joint Base Andrews Colonel Gary Charland.

During the flight from Jakarta, President Prabowo was accompanied by Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya and Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia.

Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto and Foreign Minister Sugiono, who had arrived in the US earlier, also accompanied President Prabowo during his official visit programme in Washington DC.

In the United States, President Prabowo is scheduled to attend three engagements: a meeting with US business leaders on Wednesday (18 February), the inaugural Gaza Board of Peace summit on Thursday (19 February), and a bilateral meeting with US President Donald Trump, during which the two leaders are expected to sign a reciprocal trade agreement, negotiations for which have been ongoing since 2025.
