Jakarta — Indonesia’s Foreign Minister (Menlu) Sugiono formally delivered the government’s statement of condolences on the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a United States-Israel attack. The letter was handed by Sugiono to Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi during their meeting in Jakarta. ‘I am delivering a letter from President Prabowo to President Masoud Pezeshkian to convey Indonesia’s deepest condolences on the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader,’ the official statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu RI) quoted in Jakarta on Wednesday. In the meeting, Foreign Minister Sugiono and Ambassador Boroujerdi discussed the escalation of the Middle East situation due to the US and Israel attacks on Iran that prompted Tehran’s counter-strikes at several points in the Persian Gulf. On the same occasion, Sugiono also underscored the importance of respecting international law and the United Nations Charter, and urged diplomatic steps to ease the escalation. Iran subsequently launched retaliatory missiles strikes on Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East. The escalation in the region occurred amid ongoing nuclear talks in Geneva between the US and Iran, mediated by Oman. Responding to the escalation, the Indonesian government called for an immediate halt to the hostilities and stated readiness to facilitate dialogue to restore a conducive regional environment. In the Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement on Tuesday (3/3), Sugiono said he had telephone communications with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the Middle East escalation, and expressed Indonesia’s desire to facilitate dialogue and mediation between the parties to the conflict.
