JAKARTA — For decades, educational facilities in transmigration zones have been characterised by leaking classrooms, near-collapsed roofs, and a lack of adequate sanitation facilities.

However, under President Prabowo Subianto’s leadership, this narrative of inequality is being aggressively addressed.

Beneath the figures of construction success, however, lies a deep concern from the President regarding the use of state budget allocations. In frank statements, Prabowo has questioned how a school could have only one toilet despite the constitutionally mandated substantial education budget.

For him, the condition of damaged schools is not merely a technical matter but a question of moral leadership.

This statement represents a rebuke to the education bureaucracy, which has often become trapped in administrative routine rather than focusing on meeting students’ basic needs.

As of mid-March, progress on the ground has become visibly substantial. The Ministry of Transmigration has recorded the development of 454 toilet units and clean water facilities across 122 districts spread across 27 provinces.

Beyond sanitation, the physical revitalisation of buildings has also extended to 478 schools across 129 transmigration areas.

For the President, a nation’s dignity is at stake in well-maintained classrooms and clean toilets.

“Education is what determines whether this nation becomes a poor country or a good country for its people. That is why we must repair as many schools across Indonesia as quickly as possible,” he stated.

The initiative forms part of the government’s broader commitment to accelerating the Sustainable Development Goals.
