Imported fruit
Imported fruit
From Neraca
Imported fruit such as mandarins, pears, grapes and the like are now found in abundance in markets across the country, entering villages and seizing a sizeable share of the market, once taken solely by local fruit.
Many vendors display their imported fruit very attractively, luring the public to prefer imported fruit to local produce.
Fruit vendors opt to sell imported fruit as it is more profitable and can remain fresh for longer than local fruit.
Unless the relevant authorities take action, local fruit will eventually have no place in the market. Over time, the next generation will no longer be familiar with the varieties of fruit once cherished by their ancestors. I suggest that the government look to Thailand, a country successful in developing its horticultural sector and now famous the world over for its many varieties of fruit.
