Imported food, beverages seized

PALEMBANG, South Sumatra: Palembang officials confiscated on Thursday hundreds of items of illegally imported canned food and beverages in several markets and stores in the city.

The items were seized after the traders failed to show legal import documents to government officials during the random raid on Thursday, said chief of Food and Beverage Monitoring Agency (BPOM) in Palembang, Darwin Rangkuty.

The items, which were cheaper than other brands, were allegedly smuggled from various countries, including Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. -- JP
