Important: Hajj Pilgrims' Luggage Rules for Return to Indonesia
The Indonesian Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has issued official regulations for the 2026 Hajj flight season. The baggage rules have been strictly enforced to ensure collective safety and comfort. Pilgrims must understand weight limits, prohibited items, and special Zamzam water policies before their return flight.
During Hajj flights, PT Garuda Indonesia and Saudia Airlines will only carry passport bags, cabin baggage, and checked luggage. These must meet airline standards and bear the carrier’s logo. Under the regulations, each Indonesian Hajj pilgrim is entitled to three specific items: a passport bag, a cabin bag with a maximum weight of 7kg, and a checked bag with a maximum weight of 32kg.
Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) regulations prohibit pilgrims from placing Zamzam water in luggage. Checked baggage will be screened using Multiview X-ray machines capable of detecting prohibited items, including Zamzam water. If prohibited items are found, they will be removed. However, pilgrims need not worry as each will receive an official 5-litre allotment of Zamzam water upon arrival at the Hajj debarkation camp.
In addition to Zamzam water, airlines have banned other hazardous items. Passengers are advised not to carry dangerous goods in cabin or checked luggage. The prohibited items list includes: flammable or explosive materials such as lighters, fuel, fireworks, and sparklers; firearms and sharp objects including ammunition, knives, scissors, sabres, and other sharp items; liquids, gels, aerosols, pastes, or creams exceeding 100ml in cabin baggage; and cash exceeding IDR 100 million or SAR 25,000, which is not banned but must be declared to customs officials per regulations.
