PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (INALUM) has once again affirmed its commitment to sustainable business practices by achieving the PROPER Gold rating for the operations of its Smelting Plant (ISP) and PROPER Green for the operations of its Hydropower Plant (PLTA/IPP) in the 2025 Programme for Assessing Company Performance in Environmental Management (PROPER).

The award was presented directly by the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia, Hanif Faisol Nurofiq, at Taman Mini Indonesia Indah on 7 April 2026. In his speech, Minister Hanif emphasised that PROPER has evolved into a transformative instrument that encourages businesses to go beyond mere compliance.

“PROPER is no longer just an administrative evaluation tool. PROPER is the engine of transformation that drives companies not only to comply but to exceed compliance through innovation, resource efficiency, and tangible contributions to society.”

For the 2024–2025 period, PROPER participation reached 5,476 companies, an increase of 22 per cent compared to the previous year. However, only 282 companies successfully entered the beyond-compliance category, consisting of 39 companies with Gold ratings and 243 with Green ratings. INALUM is one of the companies that successfully joined this group.

INALUM’s President Director, Melati Sarnita, stated that this achievement is the result of the company’s consistency in integrating sustainability into its business strategy.

“We interpret this PROPER Gold and Green achievement as a reflection of INALUM’s long-term commitment to placing sustainability at the core of our business strategy. Our efforts are not only focused on compliance but also on creating value through the integration of measurable and impactful environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects,” said Melati.

Historically, INALUM has demonstrated consistent performance in PROPER. The Gold rating was achieved for the Smelting Plant in Kuala Tanjung in 2022, 2024, and 2025, as well as for the PLTA operations in Paritohan in 2023. Meanwhile, the Green rating has also been consistently recorded, respectively by PLTA operations in 2022, 2024, and 2025. This track record affirms the consistent implementation of ESG principles across all of the company’s operational lines.

This achievement is supported by various environmental innovation initiatives (eco-innovation), ranging from energy and resource efficiency, waste management, to the optimisation of operational processes that contribute to improved sustainability performance. INALUM also develops a circular economy approach through the utilisation of waste into valuable products.

On the social side, the company implements community empowerment programmes based on impact measurement through the Social Return on Investment (SROI) approach. One flagship programme, “From Waste to Blessing”, demonstrates how environmental initiatives can simultaneously create economic and social value for surrounding communities.

This PROPER Gold and Green achievement further strengthens INALUM’s position as a strategic industry player that is not only oriented towards business performance but also towards environmental sustainability and community welfare. Moving forward, INALUM is committed to continuously improving sustainability performance standards and strengthening collaboration with stakeholders in supporting the clean energy transition and sustainable development in Indonesia.
