PT Pertamina Patra Niaga is demonstrating the strategic role of female ship officers as a vital component in strengthening inclusive and sustainable maritime human resources, amid the challenges of sea work that demand high resilience and discipline. Corporate Secretary of PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, Roberth M.V. Dumatubun, stated that enhancing inclusive maritime human resources is part of the company’s commitment to implementing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, particularly in the social aspect. “We see that increasing the role of women in the maritime sector is not just about equality, but also part of efforts to build superior talent that is adaptive and globally competitive,” said Roberth in his statement on Thursday, 30 April 2026. Through the Crew Sharing Session Vol. #2 event titled “At Sea Talks: From Courage to Competence, Women Powering Maritime Excellence”, Pertamina Patra Niaga provides a space for direct experience-sharing from female ship officers who carry out duties on ships. “This forum serves as a platform to strengthen confidence, share challenges, and encourage more women to pursue careers in the maritime sector,” he said. Roberth stated that currently there are 41 female ship officers and 56 female cadets serving on 78 ships, or about 2 percent of the total crew pool. This figure reflects significant opportunities to expand women’s participation in the shipping sector, which has long been dominated by men. According to him, working at sea is not just about technical skills, but also mental resilience, high discipline, and the ability to adapt in a dynamic environment. The presence of female officers on ships proves that professionalism in the maritime world is built on the basis of competence and integrity, without being limited by gender. He added that the company continues to open opportunities for competence development for all ship crew regardless of gender, so that every individual has equal opportunities to grow and contribute. “Diversity actually becomes a strength in building solid teams and more effective and sustainable operations,” said Roberth. “In the future, Pertamina Patra Niaga will continue to promote maritime talent development through policies that support equality, competence enhancement, and the creation of an inclusive work environment,” he said.
