Jakarta (ANTARA) - A child specialist and member of the Indonesian Paediatric Society’s (IDAI) Coordinating Unit for Growth and Development and Social Paediatrics has assessed that the implementation of Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025 on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection (PP Tunas) could suppress risky interactions with children.

Dr. dr. Ariani, Sp.A, Subsp.T.K.P.S(K), M. Kes, a member of IDAI’s Coordinating Unit for Growth and Development and Social Paediatrics, stated during an online seminar attended from Jakarta on Tuesday that the implementation of PP Tunas will reduce the chances of children becoming involved in interactions leading to crimes such as child grooming on digital platforms.

Child grooming is a planned psychological manipulation tactic carried out by adults by building emotional closeness and trust, as well as providing a false sense of security to children in an effort to carry out sexual exploitation.

“PP Tunas will suppress risky interactions; if the child cannot access the app, there are default privacy settings for that,” said Ariani.

PP Tunas, which will take effect from 28 March 2026, includes provisions to restrict children’s access to high-risk digital platforms and efforts to protect children in the digital space.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Regulation No. 9 of 2026 on the implementation of PP Tunas regulates restrictions on access for children under 16 years old to high-risk digital platforms.

In the implementation of the regulation, accounts belonging to children under 16 years old on high-risk digital platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Threads, Instagram, X, Bigo Live, and Roblox must be deactivated.

“So, this is actually a very good way from Komdigi to limit access, even though it will still take time in the process,” said Ariani.

“This system-based early detection will also accelerate reporting and responses if there are suspicious matters,” she added.

Nevertheless, Ariani emphasised that parents still play a crucial role in efforts to ensure children’s safety in both the virtual and real worlds.

She noted that crimes against children such as child grooming do not only occur in the virtual world but also in the real world.

Such crimes can also occur in environments that should be safe for children, such as homes, schools, and communities.

Therefore, parents and school teachers must actively participate in child protection efforts.

“Parents cannot just say ‘oh, it’s safe now’, they cannot, because there are many platforms and not all of them comply yet,” said Ariani.
