Implementation of International Standards in Vehicle Type Testing in Indonesia

The Roadworthiness Testing and Motor Vehicle Certification Centre (BPLJSKB) continues to align Indonesia’s vehicle testing systems with international standards. The Head of BPLJSKB, Iman Sukandar, stated that vehicle testing in Indonesia currently utilises a combination of national and international standards, depending on the regulations applicable to each specific testing item.

“I would describe it as dynamic; currently, some items have reached international standards, while others still utilise national standards,” Iman told Kompas.com recently. He noted that emissions testing and noise level testing have already achieved international status, whereas other parameters may still follow national protocols.

This means that for a single vehicle model, the testing system may simultaneously employ a mix of national and international standards, as dictated by the regulations governing each testing parameter. For instance, regulations from the Ministry of Environment regarding noise and emission thresholds currently utilise specific UNR standards.

Iman explained that the application of international standards in vehicle type testing is heavily dependent on existing regulations. He noted that if a regulation mandates international testing, the centre will implement it. Furthermore, the government is reportedly working to refine regulations to ensure that Indonesia’s vehicle testing standards become increasingly aligned with global rules.

Type testing is a mandatory process that all vehicles must undergo before being marketed in Indonesia. The implementation of international standards is considered vital to ensure that the quality of vehicles sold in Indonesia is on par with global products, while also supporting the harmonisation of automotive regulations between nations.
