Implementation of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution Drives Economic Equity
JAKARTA – Strengthening the implementation of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is seen as a key step in reinforcing the direction of national economic policy to be more just and to support the broad interests of the people. The principle of state management of natural resources for the greatest possible prosperity of the people is viewed as relevant to address inequality and to strengthen the national economic sovereignty.
Muh Isnain Mukadar, also known as Wale, president of the National Students League for Democracy (LMND), said that reaffirming Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution within the direction of national economic policy is an important moment to strengthen a more inclusive development orientation.
‘The President’s speech reaffirming Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is a key step to strengthen the direction of the national economy so that it is more in favour of the people,’ Wale said in a statement on Saturday (23 May 2026).
In his address to the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), President Prabowo Subianto stated that Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution is the ‘blueprint for Indonesia’s economy’ that must be implemented consistently. The President also emphasised that the land, water, and natural resources of Indonesia must be utilised to the greatest possible extent for the people’s prosperity.
LMND regards the direction as aligned with efforts to strengthen a self-reliant economy and to increase the state’s role in managing strategic sectors.
The strengthening of policy based on the constitution is seen as a foundation for reducing inequality and expanding access to the benefits of development.
The organisation also highlights ongoing challenges in resource governance, including oversight of strategic sectors and the equitable distribution of development results across regions.
‘The Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution must form the basis of building a just national economy and ensuring that the fruits of development can be felt more widely by the people,’ he said.
Additionally, LMND calls for strengthening policies on downstream industrialisation, oversight of strategic commodities, and the eradication of illegal practices in the natural resources sector.
Advancing the people’s economy through food self-sufficiency (swasembada pangan), national industrialisation, and village cooperatives is also considered important to be pursued consistently.
LMND also invites public participation in safeguarding the implementation of Article 33 of the 1945 Constitution so that the management of national wealth truly benefits the greatest possible extent for the people’s prosperity.
