Immorality in the media
Immorality in the media
From Republika
The dissolution of the information ministry by President Abdurrahman Wahid has spawned a lot of new mass media opportunities, including new television programs ranging from discussions and talk shows to entertainment. This new media environment encourages creativity.
Unfortunately only a small number of people in the media try to be innovative and create new information products that are educative for the community. Most take a short cut by exploiting and selling female sex symbols which pollutes the minds of readers. The mushrooming of sleazy tabloids and magazines such as WOW, POP and La Jang is an example of unconstructive work which undermines the press' professionalism and image while exploiting its freedom. So are television programs depicting women as sex symbols.
Therefore I appeal to all those in the media, especially television broadcasters and particularly creators of advertisements and music videos, who are guilty of these actions to reconsider. Your deeds are not only marring the meaning of reform but also jeopardizing this nation's future. The use of females as sex symbols is not creative artistic work.
