The Directorate General of Immigration has now operated 306 autogate units spread across a number of air (airport) and sea (port) immigration checkpoints (TPI).

Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko stated that the use of these autogate facilities is intended to serve crossings efficiently and transparently.

“With the spirit of Immigration for the People, autogates are our tool to demonstrate transparent performance, free from illegal levies while providing maximum comfort for every citizen and international traveller entering Indonesian territory,” Hendarsam said when confirmed in Jakarta on Friday.

“The passport and biometric scanning process runs automatically, so immigration checks per traveller only take about 15 to 20 seconds,” he added.

He explained that the 306 autogate units are spread across 11 TPIs, comprising 288 units at air TPIs and 18 units at sea TPIs.

Hendarsam acknowledged the appreciation given by the Indonesian Ombudsman when reviewing the quality of immigration services at Batam Center Port, Riau Islands, on Thursday (18/6).

During the visit, the Indonesian Ombudsman assessed that the addition of autogate facilities at Batam Centre International Port is an important effort to reduce passenger congestion and improve the quality of immigration services at international entry points.

Responding to this, Hendarsam said that the support of immigration service facilities and infrastructure also prevents potential abuse of authority by unscrupulous officers in traffic at TPIs.

The device uses facial recognition technology capable of instantly validating the authenticity of travel documents. The system will automatically reject and lock out travellers who are on the wanted list or have a criminal record.

“Public preference for automated services continues to increase. Autogate usage has currently reached an average of 63 to 64 percent of total travellers at major TPIs,” he said.

“System modernisation is projected to maintain service stability amid the trend of consistently growing international passenger flows each year,” he added.

In 2026, the Directorate General of Immigration will increase the number of autogates at several air and sea TPIs.
