The Directorate General of Immigration, under the Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services, has deported a United States citizen, identified by the initials AW, who is a fugitive in a sexual abuse case in his home country. Director General of Immigration, Hendarsam Marantoko, confirmed that the US national was deported to his country on Thursday (4/6). “On Thursday, the individual was deported. Because the criminal offence was committed in the US, he will face legal proceedings there,” Hendarsam stated in Jakarta on Sunday.

AW is known to have entered Indonesia in 2011 to evade legal prosecution for sexual abuse committed in the United States. The arrest of AW was carried out after the Directorate General of Immigration received a request for assistance from the United States Embassy, followed by a series of investigations and intelligence operations. According to Hendarsam, the case came to light after a woman, identified as NM, reported to the Directorate General of Immigration that she and her two children had suffered restrictions on their freedom and were victims of sexual abuse by AW.

After facilitating the return of NM and her children to the United States, Immigration coordinated with US authorities to trace AW’s status, eventually locating and securing him in Depok. “Administrative immigration measures, including detention, deportation, and arrest, have been taken against the individual,” said Hendarsam. He emphasised that the arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of immigration supervision and the commitment of immigration authorities to maintaining national security and sovereignty through the application of the ‘selective policy’ principle and the ‘Immigration for the People’ spirit. The deportation of AW by the Directorate General of Immigration on Thursday (4/6) was directly escorted by US Marshals.
