IMIP Utilises Organic Waste for Environmental Sustainability
PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park, or IMIP, continues to utilise organic waste to maintain environmental sustainability in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi.
“In the period from January to May 2026, IMIP recorded the utilisation of 30.8 tonnes of organic and inorganic waste,” said Yulius Susanto, Deputy Director of Operations at PT IMIP, in Morowali on Wednesday.
The waste utilisation figure is equivalent to 5.6 per cent of the total 549 tonnes of waste generated, comprising 74.68 per cent organic, 10.26 per cent inorganic, and 15.06 per cent residue.
As a vital part of the global supply chain for the electric vehicle battery industry, the company prioritises circular economy principles, particularly in waste and water management.
Wastewater treatment plants (IPAL) operate at both the estate and tenant levels, supported by continuous wastewater monitoring systems integrated with the Ministry of Environment’s platform, so that water quality can be tracked transparently and in real time.
Broadly speaking, he said, for an integrated nickel-based industrial estate, environmental, social and governance (ESG) is not merely a slogan but a business strategy. On land of around 4,000 hectares, IMIP operates interconnected stainless steel, carbon steel and electric vehicle battery industry clusters, so that waste from one production line can become raw material for another.
The company has been implementing the ESG framework since 2024. This forms part of its commitment to applying transparent, responsible and safe governance standards.
On the energy side, IMIP is driving a measured transition towards cleaner sources. By the end of 2025, the estate was operating 502 electric vehicles, including dump trucks and various items of heavy equipment. Then in May 2026, the estate added 207 electric buses as employee transport.
Beyond that, renewable energy projects continue to be rolled out, including the construction of a 200 Megawatt Peak (MWp) solar power plant targeted to begin operations in 2027. This also includes the use of waste heat power generation, hydropower and biomass.
Echoing this, Yundi Sobur, Head of the Environment Department at PT IMIP, said the company is also pursuing decarbonisation on the raw material supply side. IMIP has set procurement qualifications for recycled steel in order to reduce carbon emissions.
