IMIP Utilises Organic Waste for Environmental Sustainability
PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) is continuing its efforts to utilise organic waste to maintain environmental sustainability in Morowali Regency, Central Sulawesi. Deputy Operational Director of PT IMIP Yulius Susanto stated that from January to May 2026, the company recorded the utilisation of 30.8 tonnes of organic and inorganic waste. This achievement represents 5.6 per cent of the total 549 tonnes of waste generated, with a composition of 74.68 per cent organic, 10.26 per cent inorganic, and 15.06 per cent residue. As a crucial part of the global supply chain for the electric vehicle battery industry, the company prioritises circular economy principles, particularly in waste and water management. A Wastewater Treatment Plant (IPAL) operates at both the industrial estate and tenant levels, supported by a continuous wastewater monitoring system integrated with the Ministry of Environment’s platform, allowing water quality to be monitored transparently and in real time. He explained that for the integrated nickel-based industrial estate, environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles are not merely jargon but a business strategy. Spanning approximately 4,000 hectares, IMIP operates interconnected industrial clusters for stainless steel, carbon steel, and electric vehicle batteries, enabling waste from one production line to become raw material for another. The company has been implementing the ESG framework since 2024 as part of its commitment to transparent, responsible, and safe governance standards. In terms of energy, IMIP is driving a measured transition to cleaner sources. By the end of 2025, the estate had operated 502 electric vehicles, including dump trucks and various heavy equipment. In May 2026, the estate added 207 electric buses as a mode of employee transport. Furthermore, renewable energy projects continue to be developed, including the construction of a solar power plant with a capacity of 200 Megawatt Peak (MWp), targeted for operation in 2027, alongside the utilisation of waste heat power generation, hydropower, and biomass. Head of Environment Department at PT IMIP Yundi Sobur added that the company is also implementing decarbonisation through the raw material supply side, establishing procurement qualifications for recycled steel to reduce carbon emissions.
