IMIP Facilitates Student Internships to Improve Workplace Skills
Morowali, Central Sulawesi (ANTARA) - PT Indonesia Morowali Industrial Park (IMIP) is facilitating internship programmes for 509 pupils and university students to improve their skills and prepare them for the demands of the workplace.
“IMIP currently has 509 interns from universities and vocational schools. Alignment between their educational backgrounds and the requirements of each position is important,” IMIP Head of HR Operations Trisno Wasito said in Morowali, Central Sulawesi, on Saturday.
He said the internship programme was a form of collaboration between education and industry, giving participants direct work experience.
In addition to technical skills in their respective fields, interns also need communication and analytical abilities, teamwork, discipline and readiness to comply with workplace safety standards, he said.
According to Trisno, the growth of the processing and downstream industries at the IMIP site has increased demand for workers while also requiring human resources with skills suited to the industry’s development.
IMIP and companies operating at the site currently run three internship schemes: the Ministry of Manpower’s Magang Hub, the Ministry of Industry’s internship programme, and internship and on-the-job training placements.
“Through these programmes, participants gain not only work experience but also a direct understanding of job requirements, workplace culture, safety standards and the skills needed in an industrial setting,” he said.
Trisno said the effectiveness of an internship programme depended not only on the number of participants accepted but also on the quality of the learning process in the workplace.
Participants therefore need clear learning objectives, mentoring, tasks relevant to their skills, and assessments of their progress.
To improve the quality of the programmes, IMIP has partnered with Morowali Metal Industry Polytechnic and Swiss Skills for Competitiveness (SS4C) to hold a workshop on drafting Vocational Training Plan (RPV) documents. Ten IMIP internship mentors took part.
“Through this activity, internship mentors can identify and map the skills relevant to interns’ positions and duties,” he said.
He explained that the RPV documents are intended to ensure that participants’ educational fields, the skills they develop, the tasks assigned to them, the mentoring provided and the assessment of learning outcomes are aligned.
