IMI Central Board Orders Total Safety Standards Evaluation After Spectator Stand Collapse at Purwokerto Drifting National Championship
The central board of the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) will conduct a comprehensive evaluation of safety standards and the organisation of drifting events following the collapse of a spectator grandstand at the National Drifting Championship (Kejurnas) at GOR Satria, Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency.
IMI’s central board expressed deep concern over the incident that befell spectators. The organisation also prayed for all the victims to recover quickly and return to their families.
Regarding technical and legal handling, IMI’s central board declared its full support for the investigation being carried out by the Banyumas Police (Polresta Banyumas) to determine the exact cause of the incident in a transparent and accurate manner.
Meanwhile, medical treatment for the victims continues to be coordinated with the Banyumas Regency Government and the event organisers. IMI stated that the victims’ recovery is its top priority.
IMI’s central board also commended the swift response of the Banyumas Regency Government, Banyumas Police and medical personnel at 11 referral hospitals. As of Wednesday (29 July), the number of inpatients fell from 41 on 27 July to 16, out of a total of 90 spectators who received treatment.
IMI Chairman General Moreno Soeprapto stressed that the organisation’s main focus at present is ensuring that all victims receive the best possible care. “Our main focus and priority right now is ensuring that all victims receive the best medical treatment until they fully recover,” Moreno said in a statement.
He added that the incident would serve as material for a comprehensive evaluation by IMI’s central board. “This incident is a matter for total evaluation by the IMI central board. We are fully committed to tightening safety standards so that the drifting ecosystem remains safe, professional and continues to advance,” Moreno said.
As a follow-up, IMI’s central board will evaluate the safety and organisational standards of drifting events in order to safeguard the sustainability of national motorsport whilst improving safety for all participants and spectators.
