Imam of Mosque in the US Targeted in Shooting During Ramadan
An imam of one of the largest mosques in Utah, United States, became the target of a shooting during the holy month of Ramadan. The perpetrator fired a volley of shots at the imam before fleeing in a car.
As reported by detikNews, the volley of shots missed and did not hit the imam. Local authorities are now hunting the perpetrator of the shooting against Shuaib Din, the imam of the Utah Islamic Center.
Shuaib Din stated that the shooting occurred in front of his house on Monday (23/2) evening local time. Din’s house is only a two-minute drive from the mosque in West Jordan, near the border of Sandy, Utah.
Din said the terror occurred after he had broken his fast with his family at his house. At around 7:45 PM, he took his car out of the garage to return to the mosque. At that moment, a masked man wearing a hoodie suddenly approached him.
The armed man, Din said, got out of a car parked in front of the house. The stranger then fired shots at Din before fleeing the location.
“Clearly, he knew my house, knew my car, and knew my schedule,” Din told The Salt Lake Tribune on Tuesday (2/24/2026).
Din then contacted the 911 emergency services to report the incident. The 911 operator asked if Din had managed to note the perpetrator’s license plate number. Din admitted that he did not have time and decided to chase the perpetrator in the hope of getting the license plate number.
While about to chase the perpetrator, Din continued, the perpetrator suddenly stopped his car and got out of the car. The unknown man then fired a volley of shots, about eight shots, at the imam’s car.
The bullets pierced the front and rear seats as well as the windshield of Din’s car. After that, Din decided not to continue the chase.
Meanwhile, the Sandy Police Department confirmed that Din’s car was hit by several shots. Local authorities stated that they would thoroughly investigate the case.
“The police are deploying all available resources, including communicating with the FBI, to be able to complete our investigation and find all possible suspects,” said Sergeant Michael Olsen of the Sandy Police Department.
Local authorities have released four photos showing the perpetrator’s vehicle. The police also asked the public to report if they know any information about the vehicle.
The Mayor of Sandy, Minica Zoltanski, and the local City Council stated that the shooting targeting the local mosque imam was disturbing. They expressed their gratitude that Din was safe and unharmed.
