Imam launches clean city program
SURABAYA, East Java: In observance of National Heroes Day,
East Java Governor Imam Utomo launched a clean city program with
a call for the city's residents to clean up accumulating garbage.
"The garbage problem has caused unease among residents and in
line with Heroes Day, I hereby launch the clean city program. Let
all of us clean our own environment of the accumulating garbage,"
he said in a speech marking National Heroes Day in the city on
Saturday.
He said the clean city program would start on Sunday under the
coordination of Deputy Surabaya Mayor Bambang.
Garbage has been accumulating in temporary garbage dumps in
the city following the recent forced closure of the Keputih and
Benowo dumps in the city.
Bambang said the garbage would be dumped at the Benowo dump
following an agreement between the city administration and Benowo
residents.
The Benowo residents had been blocking garbage trucks from
entering the village due to the city administration's failure to
register them in a health insurance scheme. --Antara
