Imam Khomeini Airport in Iran Reopens and Resumes International Flights

Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, Iran, is showing signs of recovery after being closed due to war. On Saturday (25 April 2026), Iran’s main airport officially reopened several international flight routes, marking the initial step in normalising the country’s air traffic. According to reports from Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB, the first international flights from Imam Khomeini Airport went directly to several major cities, namely Istanbul, Muscat (Oman), and Madinah. This reopening restores hope for thousands of passengers affected by delays in recent weeks. Most of Iran’s air traffic has been disrupted since the joint attack by the United States (US) and Israel on 28 February 2026. That attack triggered a retaliatory response from Iran as self-defence, putting airport operations and airspace on high alert. The situation began to ease after a ceasefire agreement was implemented on 8 April. This agreement was mediated by Pakistan, which played a key role in de-escalating the conflict between Iran and Western parties. Although conditions are starting to stabilise, diplomatic relations between Iran and the US remain highly fragile. Initial-level talks were held in Pakistan two weeks ago, opening possibilities for further negotiations, though they do not promise quick results. On Saturday, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi was in Islamabad for further diplomatic agendas. Despite diplomatic movements, the chances of resuming direct talks between the US and Iran in the near future are still seen as low. Political uncertainty in both countries and recent events are the main factors hindering direct communication.
