IM57+ Institute has criticised the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for not yet examining the Director General of Customs and Excise at the Ministry of Finance, retired Lieutenant General Djaka Budi, in a suspected corruption case at the customs office. The institute is concerned that the KPK’s independence is being compromised because it has not dared to examine the retired TNI officer.

This was conveyed by IM57+ Institute, which is uneasy about the KPK’s resolve being questioned when dealing with Djaka Budi. His name emerged during a trial for alleged import bribery at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, where the court heard that Djaka Budi received a special allocation from a businessman.

“This is a test for the KPK on whether it can maintain its independence,” said IM57+ Institute Chairman Lakso Anindito in Jakarta on Thursday (18/6/2026).

Lakso reminded that prosecuting corruption cases requires the courage to resist various potential interventions. Therefore, he said, uncovering Djaka Budi’s role is key to dismantling the syndicate. “When the KPK stops at the technical implementers, repetition is likely to occur. Fundamental steps are needed to reform Customs and Excise,” Lakso stated.
