A land fire occurred at an illegal landfill in Waringinkurung, Serang Regency, Banten, last night. As of this morning, smoke was still visible at the location.

Based on videos and photos seen by detikcom on Saturday (29/8/2026), no flames were visible at the fire site. However, plumes of smoke were rising from within the rubbish piles.

“The cause of the incident is unknown. At around 6pm local time, as local residents were returning from collecting grass, they saw the fire had already spread extensively,” said Banten Police Head of Public Relations, Commissioner Maruli Hutapea.

“Officers from Waringinkurung Police immediately went to the scene of the land fire. For the time being, efforts are being made to extinguish the fire,” he continued.

According to Maruli, the burned area was previously a former brick quarry. The area is now used as a rubbish disposal site.

“Once the rubbish is full, it will be covered with soil,” said Maruli.

Maruli said firefighters attempting to extinguish the blaze were hampered by rubbish piles covered with soil. “It is now overgrown with cogon grass, which makes the fire difficult to extinguish because there are many rubbish piles underneath,” he explained.
