Illegal traders evicted

JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Mayor H. Pardjoko, assisted by the
Sanitation Department, Public Works Office and members of the
powerful Pemuda Pancasila youth organization, has evicted 70
traders illegally operating at the Manggarai Utara market.

"The eviction was the follow-up of the mayoralty's program to
improve security, order and sanitation," Pardjoko told Antara.

Pardjoko explained that he was forced to evict the traders
because they did not heed warning from the mayoralty about the
prohibition to do business at the market.

They tended to return to this location, even though some of
them have been netted in a number of raids and been given
warnings many times, the mayor said.

Head of the Manggarai sub-district, H. Iksir, said that the
market was closed after the facility was gutted by fire in 1980.
"The location has been earmarked by city administration for the
development of a greenbelt," he said. (hhr)
