JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Lately, the Jakarta City Council (DPRD) has been spotlighting the issue of rampant illegal parking in Jakarta, which requires firm and immediate action.

This matter has been specifically addressed by the special committee on parking management of the DPRD DKI Jakarta.

“If I look at it, the problem of illegal parking in Jakarta has indeed reached a serious category, even what could be called an emergency,” said the Chairman of the Special Committee on Parking Management of the DPRD DKI Jakarta, Ahmad Lukman Jupiter, when contacted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (12/5/2026).

He assessed that the potential parking revenue in Jakarta is very substantial if managed properly.

“However, the realisation of the levies is indeed considered not yet optimal compared to the potential available in the field. This means there are still leaks that need to be fixed,” he continued.

One example is what has been happening in the Blok M area, where illegal parking practices have been ongoing for three years.

Those parking managers collect money from the public without permission from the Jakarta Transportation Department (Dishub).

In fact, the potential parking revenue in Blok M is estimated to reach more than Rp 100 million per day or Rp 3 billion in one month.

It is this illegal parking practice that harms the Jakarta Provincial Government, because funds that should enter the levies are instead enjoyed by just a group of people.

In fact, if the entire parking system is well-organised and the levies enter the regional coffers maximally, they can be used for the public interest.

“It can be used again for public services such as transportation, education, health, to the development of public facilities. In addition, the city also becomes more orderly, comfortable, and safe for the public,” said Jupiter.

The Jakarta Transportation Department is advised to carry out more consistent crackdowns and strengthen field supervision.

Do not let the public see illegal parking flourishing while enforcement is not felt. Therefore, evaluation is still needed so that parking management is more professional and accountable.
