Illegal logging continues in Bogor
BOGOR: Illegal logging activities continue to occur in the
forests at Curug and Jugalaya villages, in the Jasinga district
of Bogor regency.
The forests are seriously damaged as the illegal loggers
persist in felling trees with diameters of 50 centimeters to 100
centimeters. Not only are the activities harmful to the
environment, they could also make nearby areas liable to
flooding.
Illegal loggers started to cut the trees at the forests, which
are under the management of the Research and Development
Institute of the State Forestry Estate (Perhutani), a few months
ago.
Sources said that some officers from the police and Perhutani
might be involved in the timber theft.
But an officer of Perhutani, M. Dasa, who was posted in
Jasinga about two weeks ago, denied the allegation.
Head of the Jasinga police subprecinct, First Insp. Saidhina
said he knew nothing about the illegal logging.--Antara
