Illegal logger shot dead in Kerinci park

JAMBI, Jambi: One man was shot dead in a scuffle between
police and a group of illegal loggers in the Kerinci Seblat
National Park (TNKS) in Jambi, local police announced on Monday.

Adj. Sr. Comr. Dwi Hartono, chief of the Kerinci Police, said
on Monday that the police caught the group logging illegally in
the border area between Kerinci regency and Pesisir Selatan
regency in South Sumatra last weekend.

The looters reportedly attacked the five patrolling policemen
with knives, at which the officers fired shots. Syaf was shot in
the encounter.

"Syaf died on his way to the hospital in Sungai Penuh, Kerinci
regency, 410 kilometers from Jambi. Two members of the local
police suffered stab wounds," Hartono added.

The TNKS-Kerinci police arrested two other men and seized a
Colt L-300 pickup used to transport logs. --Antara
