Illegal gun trade on Batam

BATAM, Riau: Lt. Col. A. Zainuddin, chief of the Batam
Military Subdistrict, called on local people to be alert to the
trading of illegal guns on the island.

"Local people must stay alert to the extensive trade of
illegal guns and report (any evidence) to security authorities,"
he said here on Wednesday.

Batam Police recently raided a local syndicate trading illegal
guns and ammunition on the island. They are also investigating a
man who smuggled five guns and ammunition onto the island from
Bandung, West Java.

He said security authorities would continue to crack down on
illegal guns, which are frequently used for robberies on the
