Illegal forest pillagers foiled

BENGKULU, Bengkulu: The Bengkulu Police have declared five people as suspects in an illegal logging case and for damaging the Bukit Barisan National Park in the Maje district in South Bengkulu.

Police investigator Adj. Sr. Comr. Budi Tono said the dossiers of the suspects would soon be submitted to the prosecutors.

The five suspects could be charged with violating Law No.5/1990 on ecosystems and natural resource conservation, a crime that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.

The local police have also foiled attempts to plunder an area that has some 5,000 cubic meters of logs from the national park. The police confiscated a truck and heavy equipment. -- Antara
