Illegal Dumpsite in Gunung Putri, Bogor, Catches Fire; Suspected Source from Burning Mattress

A video circulating on social media shows a suspected illegal dumpsite on fire in Cikeas Village, Gunungputri District, Bogor Regency. Residents complained that smoke from the waste pile was disturbing the community. Lukman Habib, Deputy Commander of the Gunungputri Sector Fire Department, stated that the incident in the video occurred on Tuesday (14/7/2026). The plumes of smoke visible in the video were the remnants of a fire being handled by the firefighting team. “That was a fire at the rubbish site in Cikeas,” Lukman said when asked for confirmation on Thursday (16/7). Lukman explained that the fire at the suspected illegal dumpsite was initially reported on Wednesday (8/7) evening, around 8.20 p.m. Western Indonesian Time. The extinguishing process was carried out from that day and was only completed on Tuesday (14/7). “By Tuesday it was extinguished, it was sorted. But we received information that smoke appeared again today. At the time of the initial incident, the smoke was thick and dense in the afternoon. That’s why many residents of the nearby housing complex complained,” Lukman said. Lukman explained that the fire lasted for days because flames kept emerging from beneath the waste pile, which was up to 10 metres deep. Difficult-to-reach terrain added to the obstacles during the extinguishing process. “So it was actually an illegal dumpsite. The information is that the waste came from housing complexes, dumped there. We also received information that the land was going to be turned into a car park, so the waste was dumped there for land reclamation,” Lukman said. “The height of the waste had reached 10 metres. That’s why we requested heavy equipment to break up the waste pile. We used every method to extinguish the fire. That’s why it took days, we needed heavy equipment assistance,” Lukman added. Lukman stated that the fire was suspected to have been triggered by the land manager burning a mattress near the waste pile. The growing fire then spread, causing a large blaze and producing thick smoke. “The information we received is that the manager had burned a mattress there, so the fire likely grew and spread. At the location, I also saw the remains of a mattress, its frame had been burned,” Lukman said. “We are still monitoring the situation as of today. We have also reported this to the sub-district authorities for further action,” he added.
