Jayapura – The Cartenz 2026 Peace Operation Task Force has once again uncovered the development of an illegal weapons and ammunition distribution network in Papua by securing two suspects in Jayapura Regency. The two suspects, initialled NH and HLT (38), were arrested at different locations, one in the Sentani Airport area and the other in a residential area in Jayapura Regency. This arrest is part of the development of a case involving an illegal ammunition distribution network that is indicated to be connected to the Yalimo and Yahukimo regions. Deputy Head of Public Relations for the Cartenz 2026 Peace Operation Task Force, AKBP Andria, explained that the uncovering is part of a series of operations that have been ongoing since mid-March. To date, at least 11 people have been secured in the same network. “We have uncovered an illegal weapons and ammunition distribution network in Papua. The two suspects secured are part of the case development from 12 to 28 March 2026, which is also related to networks in the Yalimo and Yahukimo areas,” he stated in a written statement, quoted on Sunday, 29 March 2026. Based on initial investigation results, NH is known to be a member of the KKB Yamue Yahukimo Battalion who is suspected of acting as a fund provider in the purchase of ammunition through intermediaries. Meanwhile, HLT is suspected of acting as a supplier of illegal ammunition obtained unlawfully, which was then distributed within the network. “In this network, NH acts as the fund provider, while HLT as the illegal ammunition supplier. From HLT’s hands, we secured 132 rounds of 7.62 mm calibre ammunition,” Andria added. In addition to the 132 rounds of ammunition, the Cartenz Peace Operation Task Force also secured various other evidence items consisting of hundreds of rounds of ammunition of various calibres, one homemade weapon, several magazines, and firearm components without permits. This evidence indicates organised illegal firearm and ammunition circulation. “The secured evidence shows a structured distribution pattern, from ammunition of various calibres to unlicensed weapon components,” he explained. This uncovering is part of the continuous efforts of the authorities to break the chain of illegal weapons and ammunition distribution in Papua. In the period from 12 to 28 March 2026, the authorities have secured at least 11 people with various roles, from funders, intermediaries, to ammunition suppliers.
