Ila's Struggle with PNM Mekaar: Rebuilding Life from the Lowest Point
During the Covid-19 pandemic, a mother named Ila reached a point of unprecedented hardship. Her family’s income was severely disrupted after her husband was laid off, leaving her to manage pregnancy and prepare for her children’s future educational needs amidst significant financial constraints.
Refusing to succumb to despair, Ila sought to rebuild her life through PNM Mekaar, taking the courageous step of becoming a tailor. Her journey serves as a portrait of a woman from a low-income background striving to rise during the most difficult of times. Through PNM Mekaar, she gained access to the capital necessary to purchase a sewing machine, which served as the foundation for her home-based business.
Through continuous learning and hard work, Ila began accepting sewing orders and garment repairs, gradually building trust within her community. “I could not continue living like this, simply surrendering to my circumstances. I had to rise. I am grateful to President Prabowo, because the PNM Mekaar programme is very beneficial for MSMEs in Indonesia. Through this programme, I have been able to educate my children and provide a decent home,” Ila stated.
Her journey was not without obstacles, including periods of uncertain income and fluctuating orders. However, through the guidance and group meetings provided by the Mekaar programme, Ila found the space to learn and persevere. Today, the fruits of her labour are evident; her tailoring business has bolstered her family’s economy, allowing her to provide a better quality of life. Her story demonstrates that empowerment does not always begin with grand gestures, but through small opportunities sustained by perseverance.
