IKPPI: Vice President's Visit to Palembang PSEL Shows Commitment to Tackling Waste
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Women Warriors’ Association (IKPPI) has stated that the presence of Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka during his inspection of the Waste-to-Energy Plant (PSEL) in Palembang, South Sumatra, reflects the government’s seriousness in tackling Indonesia’s waste problems.
“The Vice President’s presence underscores the government’s seriousness in addressing waste issues, particularly in Palembang,” said Neni Triana Zainal, Chair of IKPPI South Sumatra (Sumsel), in a statement received in Jakarta on Friday.
Neni expressed gratitude for the opportunity to speak with the Vice President, conveying her appreciation to the country’s second-highest official.
“On behalf of IKPPI, I would like to thank the Vice President. He said he had reminded the plant’s operators to pay attention to the safety and comfort of the surrounding community,” she said.
She added that Gibran had also urged that the plant’s presence benefit local residents rather than create new problems.
Meanwhile, IKPPI Chairperson Sinda Sutadisastra expressed hope that the Palembang waste-to-energy plant would create new jobs for local communities.
“In addition, there should be empowerment of micro, small and medium enterprises (UMKM) around the project site. So modern waste management, the absorption of local labour, and UMKM empowerment form an integral part of PSEL development,” Sinda said.
“Beyond generating electricity, it will also strengthen a more modern and sustainable urban environmental management system,” she added.
For context, during his visit to the PSEL site in Keramasan, Kertapati District, Vice President Gibran received a briefing on the construction and operational readiness of the Palembang plant.
The facility is projected to process up to 1,000 tonnes of waste per day into electrical energy, and is expected to help reduce waste volumes whilst supporting energy security.
The Vice President also witnessed first-hand the process of converting waste into electricity. The Palembang PSEL is targeted to begin operations in October 2026.
In addition to reviewing the plant’s readiness, Vice President Gibran also visited Siti Fatimah Az-Zahra Hospital in Jakabaring and the construction of the Musi V Bridge toll road.
