The Government has ensured that urban aesthetics in Ibu Kota Nusantara (IKN), the new capital city, are carefully designed as part of the smart city concept. Infrastructure development has become a priority to keep the new capital area orderly and prevent it from appearing haphazard.

As a smart city, IKN applies an underground utility management system through a facility called the Multi Utility Tunnel (MUT). All important utility networks, ranging from water pipes to electrical cables, are placed in a dedicated underground space.

The MUT system is implemented across the entire IKN area. The utility tunnels are designed to accommodate various networks, such as electrical cables, fibre optics, water pipes, and gas networks in a single integrated conduit.

The presence of MUT also simplifies the process of maintaining utility networks. With this system, repairs can be carried out without needing to excavate road surfaces, which could disrupt traffic and community activities.

Beyond improving efficiency, the use of MUT also supports IKN’s concept as a modern, well-organised, and environmentally friendly city. The sight of dangling cables and road damage from excavation work is expected to disappear, allowing the city to present a cleaner and more sophisticated appearance.
