IKJ Students Dress as Rubbish Bins at Rasuna Said CFD to Educate Public on Waste Sorting
In the midst of the bustle at the Car Free Day (CFD) on Jalan H.R. Rasuna Said in South Jakarta on Sunday (10/5/2026), four individuals in striking costumes caught the attention of residents. Two wore costumes shaped like green and yellow rubbish bins, while the other two donned colourful outfits adorned with various types of rubbish. The four are students from the Jakarta Institute of the Arts (IKJ) who joined in livening up the waste sorting movement declaration held by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in the Rasuna Said CFD area. According to him, the education was deliberately packaged in the form of entertainment to make it more easily accepted by the public, especially children. “We create activations for young children in particular. We give them types of waste, for example organic. They then choose which one. We certainly let them know if, for example, the yellow one means it’s not that,” said Ahmad to Kompas.com on Sunday. “If it’s the green one, then we say ‘yeah’, meaning they are correct,” he continued. Ahmad said that he and his friends were invited to enliven the waste sorting movement declaration event in the Rasuna Said CFD area. “We just inform them like that but in a happy package, entertainment like that,” he said. “If the message is perhaps that disposing of waste shouldn’t be made difficult. So with our presence like this, we try to convey that sorting waste is not difficult, sorting waste is easy,” he added. According to him, many residents still mistakenly differentiate between organic and inorganic waste types. Through an entertainment approach, residents who still sort waste incorrectly can be directly educated in a more enjoyable way. “Many earlier also got it wrong; when we gave them non-organic waste, they put it in the organic bin. In the end, we provided information and they just realised,” said Udin. Ahmad also admitted to appreciating the presence of rubbish bins more after wearing the costume throughout the CFD event.
