IKIP Surabaya selects new rector
SURABAYA: The state Teachers Training Institute (IKIP) in Surabaya, is having trouble selecting a new rector to replace Soerono Martorahardjo.
The three best of ten nominees for the position are said to have flaws. Although two of them have doctorate degrees, one is said to have been involved in corruption involving a campus development project three years ago and one has been the target of student protests over the expulsion of a lecturer.
The other candidate has good leadership and academic ability but only has an undergraduate degree (S1), said lecturers at the institute yesterday.
Academics at the institute doubt that he would be respected professionally, because of his lack of experience and scientific background.
Suripan Sadi Hutomo, one of the three best candidates, said that the nominees were selected on Sept. 17.
"But the results have not been announced yet. Not even internally," he said.
The institute is preparing to become a university in about three years, when is expected to have the biggest campus in Southeast Asia. (27/14)
