IKD Prepared as Foundation for Indonesia's Digital Public Infrastructure

The Digital Population Identity (IKD) is being directed to serve not just as a digital replacement for population documents. The government is preparing the digital identity as one of the foundations of the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) that can connect the public with various digital services securely and in an integrated manner. “As an alternative, population identity can use the IKD with a QR Code or the Single Sign-On (SSO) method,” said Teguh Setyabudi, Director General of Population and Civil Registration at the Ministry of Home Affairs. In addition to displaying the e-KTP, Family Card, and other population documents in digital format, the IKD can be used for SSO and data sharing based on the owner’s consent via a QR Code. This function means the digital identity does not stop at being a representation of a physical document. The IKD can become the public’s gateway to accessing government services online while simultaneously verifying identity when using other digital services. “In the future, IKD activation will be directed through a remote onboarding mechanism, so the public will not need to visit the Dukcapil office in person,” Teguh stated. Teguh noted that as of 31 July 2026, there were 21,152,840 users who had activated their IKD. This number is an important asset in building a digital identity ecosystem that can be used across services. The various features available on the IKD include: Application for Printing Family Cards, Application for Printing Indonesian Citizen Biodata, Certificate of Moving (Individual), Separation/Split of Family Card (Individual), Blood type, Issuance of Indonesian Citizen Birth Certificates (without NIK), Issuance of Indonesian Citizen Birth Certificates (with NIK), Issuance of Death Certificates, Education Changes, and Registration of Non-Permanent Residents. Previously, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Chair of the National Economic Council and Chair of the Government Digital Transformation Acceleration Committee, stated that population data integration must be supported by the development of an integrated ecosystem to ensure more comprehensive data utilisation.
