Ijen Express Boosts East Java Tourism Travel, Offering a Connected Eastern Landscape in One Journey
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Travel to the eastern region of Java is now increasingly accessible with the introduction of the Ijen Express train service, which connects Malang and Ketapang (Banyuwangi) on a return basis. Since commencing operations on 1 February 2025, this service has become a preferred option for the public for both tourism trips and inter-city mobility.
During the period from January to March 2026, the Ijen Express served 56,105 customers, an increase compared to the same period in 2025 when it served 22,352 customers. This growth reflects the continuously developing travel needs with efficient and comfortable transport options.
Vice President of Corporate Communication at KAI, Anne Purba, stated that the presence of the Ijen Express expands access to the eastern Java region, which has diverse tourism potential.
“The train provides a measured journey in terms of time and comfort, while also giving customers the opportunity to directly observe the character of the areas traversed,” said Anne.
The Ijen Express journey begins from Malang with mountain landscapes and cool air. The route then heads north towards the Pasuruan and Probolinggo areas, featuring views of expansive rice fields and distant mountain backdrops on clear weather days.
Entering the Jember region, the atmosphere shifts to plantation and rural areas that are more serene. Community activities are visible close to the railway tracks, presenting a picture of daily life that runs alongside train transportation.
The journey continues towards Banyuwangi with the route increasingly dominated by forest and hilly areas. The dynamic track contours in this segment offer a different travel experience compared to previous regions.
Approaching Ketapang Station, passengers enter the eastern tip of Java Island, which serves as a gateway to various flagship destinations such as Ijen Crater, Baluran National Park, and beach areas in Banyuwangi.
The presence of the Ijen Express facilitates the movement of tourists while opening up economic access for communities along the route. This connected journey promotes tourism activities, local businesses, and more efficient inter-regional mobility.
Schedule options for morning and evening departures provide flexibility for customers in planning their trips, whether to enjoy the scenery along the route or rest during the journey.
For ease of travel planning, tickets for the Ijen Express can be booked through the Access by KAI application. Customers can view schedules, select seats, and arrange trips conveniently.
“The connectivity built through the train benefits the community. Journeys become more efficient, destinations are easier to reach, and activities in various areas are stimulated,” Anne concluded.
