'IHT' libel damages donated to charity
SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore's top three leaders have donated to charity the entire sum of S$950,000 (US$678,000) in libel damages they won from the International Herald Tribune (IHT), the government announced yesterday.
Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his son, Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, had won the amount from the Paris-based newspaper in a landmark trial last July.
The entire sum was donated by the three to charity, said a statement from Goh's office. The beneficiaries included community self-help groups, various charities and educational institutions, the statement said.
