IHSG Strengthens on Positive Market Response to MSCI's Retention of Indonesia's Emerging Market Status
The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) opened up 40 points, or 0.67 percent, at 6,142 on Wednesday, 24 June 2026, driven by a positive market response to MSCI’s decision to retain Indonesia’s Emerging Market status. Associate Director of Pilarmas Investindo Sekuritas, Maximilianus Nicodemus, stated that the global index provider acknowledged Indonesia’s capital market reform agenda in maintaining the classification. However, he cautioned that despite these efforts, a lack of confidence remains the primary barrier to foreign capital inflows. “It has never felt like Indonesia has experienced pressure from all directions like this,” Nico remarked, citing concerns over government policy and political stability. He projected that the IHSG still has the potential for limited weakness, with technical analysis indicating a support and resistance range of 6,050 to 6,220. MSCI’s announcement also noted that if adequate progress is not observed by the November 2026 MSCI Index Review, it will consider options for appropriate treatment of the Indonesian market, potentially including a consultation on reclassification from Emerging Market to Frontier Markets.
