The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) plunged sharply in early trading on Tuesday (23/6), falling 58 points or 0.96% to 6,056. The decline reflects market caution as investors await several crucial developments, including an assessment by MSCI and a sovereign debt rating review by S&P Global. Market focus is primarily on the Annual Market Classification Review announcement by MSCI, scheduled for Wednesday (24/6) morning. This decision is critical as it will determine whether the Indonesian stock market retains its Emerging Market status or is downgraded to Frontier Market. Additionally, investors are anticipating the results of S&P Global’s review of Indonesia’s sovereign debt rating at the end of June 2026. Head of Research at Phintraco Sekuritas, Ratna Lim, noted that market participants are also scrutinising the implementation of the Financial Sector Development and Strengthening Law (UU P2SK). A particular point of focus is Article 8B paragraph (1), which allows the Ministry of Finance, Bank Indonesia (BI), and the Indonesia Investment Authority (Danantara) to become shareholders of the stock exchange. Furthermore, the requirement for BI to obtain parliamentary approval for its operational budget and monetary policy has sparked concern. “This raises investor worries about the independence of BI as a central bank,” said Ratna. From a technical perspective, Ratna explained that if the IHSG closes below the 6,100 level, the index is likely to test the psychological support at 6,000. However, if it manages to hold above 6,100, a consolidation phase is expected to continue within the range of 6,050 to 6,220. Investors are advised to remain vigilant and monitor official data releases as well as global sentiment that could affect short-term market volatility.
