IHSG Plunges 1.89% to 5,873 as Rupiah Breaches Rp18,000 per US Dollar
The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) Composite Index (IHSG) ended trading on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, deep in the red with a sharp decline. The index fell 107.41 points, or 1.89%, to close at 5,873. The sell-off occurred as the rupiah exchange rate once again breached the Rp18,000 per US dollar mark. The IHSG opened at 5,984 and briefly touched that level as its intraday high before steadily weakening to a low of 5,872. The decline reflected widespread pressure across most stock sectors throughout the session. Trading data from the Indonesia Stock Exchange showed that selling pressure dominated market movements. Of all shares traded on Wednesday, 191 stocks advanced, 482 declined, and 116 remained unchanged. The overwhelming number of declining stocks contributed to the index’s nearly two percent drop. The stock market weakness coincided with renewed pressure on the rupiah. In the spot market, the rupiah weakened by 34.5 points, or 0.19%, to Rp18,027 per US dollar. According to the Bloomberg Dollar Index, the rupiah also fell 34 points, or 0.19%, to Rp18,014 per US dollar. The rupiah’s breach of the Rp18,000 level occurred alongside the domestic stock market’s correction. Of the 11 sectoral indices on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, only one managed to end the session in positive territory. The healthcare sector was the sole gainer, rising approximately 1%. The remaining ten sectors all declined in line with the broader IHSG. The deepest losses were recorded in the basic materials sector, which fell 4.35%, followed by the property sector, down 2.68%, and the consumer cyclicals sector, which dropped 2.50%.
