IHSG Opens Lower, Tracking Regional and Wall Street Declines
Jakarta – The Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) Composite index opened 2 points, or 0.04 percent, lower at 5,984 on Wednesday, 8 July 2026.
Head of Retail Research Analyst, Fanny Suherman, predicted the IHSG could potentially break through resistance, shadowed by corrections in today’s trading. “The IHSG has the potential to try to break the resistance at 6,050. If it fails, a reasonable correction could occur,” Fanny stated in her daily research note on Wednesday.
She noted that Asian markets fell in unison during Tuesday’s trading, even though a projected surge in Samsung Electronics’ quarterly profit, driven by high AI demand, had briefly provided positive sentiment. At the same time, the Japanese yen remained near its lowest level in almost 40 years amid speculation of government intervention.
Samsung Electronics, the world’s largest memory chip maker, estimated its April-June operating profit jumped 19-fold year-on-year to KRW89.4 trillion (approximately US$58.44 billion). Despite this, the South Korean stock market fell 4.9 percent. The Nikkei 225 index also weakened by 2.12 percent. Meanwhile, South Korean chipmaker SK Hynix launched a share sale in the US to raise KRW43 trillion (approximately US$28.07 billion), reportedly securing indications of demand worth up to US$7 billion from major investors. Broadcom also announced an expansion of its partnership with Apple through to 2031 to develop and supply specialised chips.
“IHSG support lies at the 5,900-5,950 level, while resistance is in the 6,000-6,050 range,” Fanny added.
For context, Wall Street indices fell in unison during Tuesday’s trading. The heaviest pressure came from a sell-off in AI and chipmaker stocks, amid a surge in oil prices due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.25 percent, the Nasdaq Composite weakened 1.16 percent, and the S&P 500 declined 0.45 percent. On the other hand, Micron Technology shares plunged 4.7 percent, followed by KLA Corp, Marvell Technology, Broadcom, and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), which also closed lower.
