The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (BEI) closed lower on Monday afternoon, following the weakening of Asian stock markets. The IHSG closed down 24.02 points, or 0.37%, at 6,501.67. Meanwhile, the group of 45 leading stocks, or the LQ45 index, fell 2.64 points, or 0.41%, to 641.95.

“Asian regional markets tended to weaken in line with the decline in US stock futures ahead of the press conference by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent regarding plans for additional sanctions against Iran. Although Iran stated that the move would not weaken Tehran,” said Maximilianus Nico Demus, Associate Director of Research and Investment at Pilarmas Investindo Sekuritas, in his analysis in Jakarta on Monday.

From the Asian region, investors are currently awaiting the meeting of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress on 25-28 August 2026, to seek signals of new policy, especially after a series of disappointing economic data and the government’s commitment to strengthen economic growth.

Domestically, the IHSG weakened amid market participants’ concerns over the current account deficit widening to its highest level in history, due to the shrinking goods surplus and rising energy import costs.

Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded that Indonesia’s current account deficit in the second quarter of 2026 widened to 12.5 billion US dollars, equivalent to 3.3% of gross domestic product (GDP).

Opening higher, the IHSG moved into negative territory until the close of the first trading session. In the second session, the IHSG remained in the red until the close of stock trading. Based on the IDX-IC Sectoral Index, two sectors strengthened, led by the raw materials sector which rose 1.21%, followed by the industrial sector which rose 0.15%.

Meanwhile, nine sectors weakened, with the healthcare sector falling the deepest at 2.3%, followed by the property and financial sectors which fell 1.27% and 0.86% respectively.

The stocks that experienced the largest price increases were PICO, ELIT, SAFE, EKAD, and CENT. Meanwhile, the stocks that experienced the largest price declines were MEJA, ICON, MPRO, SDMU and CBTN.

Stock trading frequency was recorded at 2,171,000 transactions with a total of 34.23 billion shares traded worth Rp14.26 trillion. A total of 276 stocks rose, 384 stocks fell and 303 were unchanged.

Asian regional stock markets this afternoon included the Nikkei index which weakened 0.69% to 65,560.00, the Shanghai index weakened 0.59% to 3,882.01, the Hang Seng index weakened 1.89% to 25,517.33, the Kospi index weakened 3.12% to 6,696.96, and the Strait Times index weakened 0.15% to 5,680.69.
