Jakarta — The Jakarta Composite Index (IHSG) briefly moved into positive territory at the start of trading on Thursday, 21 May 2026, but reversed and fell as the market opened amid persistent pressure from market sentiment, both externally and domestically. In the pre-opening session, the IHSG rose by 47.984 points, or 0.76 per cent, to 6,366.485. However, the gains did not last. Around 09:11 WIB, the IHSG turned down by 23.67 points, or 0.37 per cent, to 6,294.83. In this morning’s trading, the IHSG fluctuated to a high of 6,378.81 and a low of 6,291.04. Trading frequency reached 217,400 transactions. A total of 274 shares advanced, 275 declined, and 410 were unchanged. Even though it opened higher, analysts said the IHSG remains in a downtrend amid pressure from various external and domestic sentiment factors. Technical analyst Herditya Wicaksana of MNC Sekuritas said that on Thursday’s trading the IHSG could move higher only modestly, with a support level at 6,184 and a resistance at 6,388. According to Herditya, market players are still watching the impact of the MSCI rebalancing, which has triggered selling pressure on several large-cap stocks. “The IHSG is still in its downtrend phase, and tomorrow (Thursday) we expect it to move up slightly with support at 6,184 and resistance at 6,388, where it seems the market will still be pressured by MSCI rebalancing actions as well as mining regulations,” he told Kompas.com on Wednesday evening, 20 May 2026. Asian stock markets were mostly higher on Thursday. The SSE Composite in China rose 29.04 points or 0.70 per cent to 4,191.23. The Nikkei 225 in Japan jumped 2,067.61 points or 3.46 per cent to 61,872.02. Meanwhile, the Hang Seng in Hong Kong gained 127.70 points or 0.50 per cent to 25,778.82. The S&P/ASX 200 in Australia also rose by 140.30 points or 1.65 per cent to 8,636.90. On the other hand, The Asia Dow remained in negative territory, down 66.05 points or 1.04 per cent to 6,311.60.
