IDX North Sumatra: Capital Market Investors Reach 1.49 Million SID, Highest Outside Java
The number of capital market investors in North Sumatra reached 1,493,064 Single Investor Identification (SID) holders as of July 2026. This figure positions North Sumatra as the province with the highest number of capital market investors outside of Java.
The Head of the Representative Office of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in North Sumatra, Muhammad Pintor Nasution, stated that investor growth in the province has seen a significant increase. “The increase in investors in North Sumatra has risen significantly, making it number one outside Java,” Pintor told reporters in Medan on Thursday (10/9/2026).
According to Pintor, Medan continues to dominate the number of capital market investors in North Sumatra with 396,261 SID. This is followed by Deli Serdang with 202,644 SID, Langkat with 79,797 SID, Simalungun with 76,266 SID, and Asahan with 59,252 SID.
He explained that the number of capital market investors in North Sumatra was only around 14,000 SID in 2012, a figure that has surged to 1,493,064 SID by July 2026. In addition to the increase in investors, the number of North Sumatran companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange has also grown. In 2012, there were only three public companies, whereas as of July 2026, that number has risen to 12 companies. “This year, there will be another palm oil sector company looking to list on the exchange,” he added.
Pintor noted that nationally, Java remains the region with the highest number of capital market investors. Sumatra holds the second position, with North Sumatra being the leading province outside of Java. The increase in investors is being driven by the growing number of representative offices and Investment Galleries (GI) across various regions. “There used to be 200 Investment Galleries; now there are 1,500 nationwide. In North Sumatra, there are currently 28 established in universities and government offices, such as in Langkat and Tebing Tinggi. This year, we will add another eight Investment Galleries,” he explained.
Pintor stated that the presence of Investment Galleries in government offices and the availability of online stock trading services through securities firms have made it easier for the public to invest. “The existence of Investment Galleries in government offices and online securities trading is very helpful,” he said.
In terms of demographics, capital market investors in North Sumatra are still dominated by the younger generation. Investors aged 18-25, or Generation Z, account for 33.64 per cent, followed by the 26-30 age group at 24.38 per cent, and those over 31 at 24.50 per cent. “The largest number of investors are young, but the largest amount of funds comes from the older age groups,” Pintor revealed.
Regarding companies planning to list on the exchange, Pintor mentioned that some companies previously planned to list but were rejected due to various requirements. Meanwhile, Bank Sumut reportedly withdrew its own previously submitted application for listing. Pintor added that the regulations for entering the exchange are becoming stricter, particularly regarding the educational background requirements for company officials. “Previously, it didn’t matter what the educational background of a finance director was, but now they must have an economics background,” he concluded.
