Idul Adha Reflection: Muhammadiyah Chief Highlights Social Inequality

Muhammadiyah Chairman Haedar Nashir addressed social inequality in his Idul Adha 1447 Hijriyah reflection message. In a video uploaded to the Muhammadiyah Channel YouTube page on Tuesday, 26 May 2026, Haedar stated that the nation continues to grapple with social inequality issues. ‘When the nation still grapples with social inequality, with a small group controlling the bulk of the country’s wealth,’ he said. He also touched on social conflicts and the corrupt behaviour of certain officials. Regarding these social conflicts, Haedar believes the primary cause is egoistic greed and insatiable desire for more. He described this as a soul far removed from piety. ‘They merely serve and succumb to insatiable greed, indifferent to the harm caused to fellow citizens and the environment,’ he said. Piety is not merely rhetorical or confined to lofty religious scholarship in ivory towers, but must manifest in tangible actions. ‘If the spirituality of piety is embodied in reality, then, God willing, a system and culture of righteousness will flourish, spreading goodness in personal life, family, society, the nation, and the wider world,’ he added.
