Idul Adha holiday: Yogyakarta's Malioboro quiet in the daytime
The Malioboro area in Yogyakarta is typically a favourite tourist destination during holidays. However, on the day after Idul Adha, the area was observed to be relatively quiet. According to detikJogja’s observation at 11:02 AM on Thursday, 28 May 2026, a number of tourists were seen moving along the pedestrian areas. Nevertheless, there was no significant crowd. Several tourists were seen relaxing on available benches, taking selfies, and purchasing Jogjakarta’s distinctive souvenirs.
Susanti, a tourist from Bantul, stated she intentionally visited Malioboro to spend her holiday time with her family. “I specifically chose to come here as both my children’s school holidays and my father’s leave coincided. Since the holidays are close, we opted for a nearby destination. I also bought some batik earlier,” Susanti told detikJogja in Malioboro on Thursday, 28 May 2026.
Susanti added that the area felt quieter than usual during holiday seasons. “It’s quiet, unlike typical holiday periods. Perhaps because it’s still morning, and it might pick up in the evening. Alternatively, many may have chosen to stay home due to Idul Adha,” she continued.
Rania, a tourist from Surabaya, similarly shared that she had planned her Yogyakarta trip well in advance. “I had planned to visit Yogyakarta as the holiday extends until Monday. I’m also working from anywhere tomorrow,” Rania said.
She expressed her satisfaction with the less crowded Malioboro. “It’s coincidental that Malioboro wasn’t too busy, and the weather wasn’t too hot. I’m happy to be here. I just bought batik and ate gudeg earlier,” she concluded.
