Idrus Marham Says Golkar Fully Supports Prabowo's Independent and Active Diplomacy in the US
Jakarta, VIVA – The Golkar Party has affirmed its full support for President Prabowo Subianto’s pursuit of an independent and active foreign policy.
The endorsement was conveyed by Golkar Deputy Chairman Idrus Marham following President Prabowo’s working visit to Washington DC, United States.
Idrus stated that Golkar Chairman Bahlil Lahadalia had instructed all party cadres to fully support the President’s foreign policy decisions. He argued that the approach was not only conceptually sound but also strategically effective within the framework of long-term national interests.
“From a diplomatic perspective, Prabowo’s policy is understood as a form of strategic rationality by a middle power seeking to maximise foreign policy autonomy without compromising the stability of the international system,” Idrus said in a statement on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.
Idrus emphasised that should any deviation from national interests arise, President Prabowo would be expected to take firm corrective action, as his nationalist orientation is rooted in the interests of the state rather than short-term political calculations.
According to Idrus, the independent and active stance is not merely a neutral position but rather a diplomatic hedging strategy that enables Indonesia to build multipolar relations simultaneously.
President Prabowo departed for the United States to hold bilateral meetings with US President Donald Trump to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and strategic cooperation across various sectors.
In addition, Prabowo was scheduled to attend the inaugural meeting of the Gaza Peace Council, the Board of Peace (BoP), and to sign agreements related to US import tariff policies.
Golkar assessed that the agenda reflected Prabowo’s consistency in championing national interests on the global stage.
“Golkar Party will ensure it stands at the forefront in safeguarding and supporting the government’s foreign policy,” he said.
