IDI Lampung: Intern Doctor's Death in Metro Not Due to Overwork

The Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) of Lampung stated that the death of intern doctor M Zulfikar Drakel in Metro City was allegedly due to a previously unknown underlying illness. “The results of the investigation we conducted showed no indication of overwork or excessive workload. We also found no evidence of bullying or violence in the workplace,” said Head of IDI Lampung Josi Harnos when confirmed in Bandarlampung on Thursday. According to him, the investigation was carried out by gathering information from fellow intern doctors, the hospital where he served, the hospital director, and supervising doctors. “From the investigation, it was found that there was a suspected underlying illness that was previously unknown,” said Josi. “There was an infection, but it could not be determined what infection, where, or what kind, because the family refused an autopsy. We respect the family’s decision,” he said. He added that the deceased’s character, who tended to be quiet and lived separately from his colleagues, made information about his health condition difficult to ascertain. “So the death of Doctor Zulfikar cannot be equated with previous cases, because the cause is different,” he said. “We also appreciate the involvement of the Ministry of Health, the Police, the Medical and Health Division (Biddokkes), the IDI Executive Board, and the Provincial Health Office in the investigation process,” he added. Doctor M Zulfikar Drakel, a participant in the Indonesian Doctor Internship Programme (PIDI), passed away on 21 July 2026 while serving at Sukadana Regional General Hospital in East Lampung.
