IDI Confirms Death of Intern Doctor in Lampung Was Not Due to Overwork or Bullying

The Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) of Lampung has confirmed that the death of an intern doctor in Lampung, which had drawn public attention, was not caused by excessive workload or bullying. The conclusion was based on the results of an investigation into the case.

The victim was identified as Muhammad Zulfikar Drakel, 25, an alumnus of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Indonesia. He was undertaking his service period as an intern doctor under the Indonesian Doctor Internship Programme at Sukadana Regional General Hospital in East Lampung Regency.

Doctor Zulfikar was found deceased in a room at Sakinah Guest House on Jalan Imam Bonjol, Metro Pusat District, Metro City, on Tuesday, 21 July 2026, at around 19.00 WIB. The discovery was immediately reported to the police for further investigation.

The Chair of IDI Lampung, Josi Harnos, stated that a thorough investigation had been conducted involving various parties directly connected to the deceased’s activities during the internship programme. The inquiry included gathering statements from fellow intern doctors, the hospital where the victim served, the hospital director, and the supervising doctors overseeing the programme.

‘The results of the investigation show no indication of overwork or excessive labour. We also found no evidence of bullying or violence in the workplace,’ said IDI Lampung Chair Josi Harnos when confirmed in Bandarlampung on Thursday, 23 July 2026. The statement addressed various speculations that had circulated among the public after news of the young doctor’s death emerged.

In addition to ruling out overwork and bullying, IDI also revealed a suspected medical factor contributing to Zulfikar’s death. Josi explained that the investigation pointed to the possibility that the victim had an underlying disease that was previously unknown to both his colleagues and his work environment.
